Trondheim Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed a long musical tradition. Up to the 19. century Trondheim was the centre for sacred music, with many significant musicians settling. Along with the expanding european music culture, several music societies were formed. TSO was founded in 1909. The development of the orchestra gained impetus with the jubilee of St. Olav in 1930. In 1947 the foundation of the Trondheim Chamber Orchestra signified the beginning of the modern professional orchestra. In more recent times TSO with its 75 musicians has established a solid position as an inspiring impuls not only for the local musical life but for the whole country. Successful tours in Germany, Austria, Spain and Czech with high artistic quality has given the orchestra a good international reputation. Chief conductor and artistic leader from the 03/04 season is Eivind Aadland.
 
Eivind Aadland is Chief Conductor and Artistic Leader to the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and has quickly established himself as one of Norway s leading conductors.
 
Encouraged by Mariss Jansons to pursue his conducting career, Eivind Aadland maintains a regular relationship with the Oslo Philharmonic and last season they completed a highly successful tour of Norway which included Dvorak's New World Symphony. Mr Aadland will return to Oslo Philharmonic in March 2004 which will feature Strauss Till Eulenspiegel and other forthcoming engagements include a reinvitation to Swedish Radio Symphony, Het Gelders Orkest, Stavanger Symphony, Norrkoping Symphony and Norrlandsoperan (Umeå). There are also plans to return to Den Norske Opera following his successful debut there with Mozart's Magic Flute. Mr Aadland has worked with many of the Scandinavian orchestras such as Bergen Philharmonic (which included a performance Bruckner's 4th Symphony as part of the 2001 Bergen International Festival), Odense Symphony, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Norwegian National Youth Orchestra.,Malmo Symphony and Norwegian Radio Orchestra where he most recently conducted Beethoven Symphony No.4.
 
Mr. Aadland prolific recording output encompasses a diverse range of repertoire and he is a champion of Norwegian and Swedish composers. Eivind Aadland has made a number of recordings with Stavanger Symphony and a disc of Irgens Jensen's works with the Bergen Philharmonic. He has recorded for Hyperion, ASV, IMP Classics, Koch, Simax and BIS records.
 
As a violinist, Eivind Aaadland was concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic (1981-1989) and Music Director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra during 1987-1997 with whom he directed concerts at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and made a number of well received recordings. Mr Aadland studied with Yehudi Menhuin and together they performed chamber concerts in Paris and London as well as in Switzerland. As a conductor, Eivind Aadland studied under Jorma Panula.
